This is your Morning Funk! Every weekday morning, this will be your place to find the top geek stories from around the internet. Today we have news from Jurassic World, Spectre, Super Mario Bros. and much more!

Continuing its relentless crushing of box office records, Jurassic World has earned over one billion dollars at the international box office, making it only the fourth film to do so, reports Variety. The Colin Trevorrow directed film has now grossed a total of 1.65 billion dollars, making it the third-highest worldwide-grossing movie of all time, passing Marvel’s The Avengers. While I enjoyed Chris Pratt’s performance and some elements of the film, I found the movie as a whole unsatisfying, so its unstoppable success is a bit of a mystery to me. I wouldn’t mind seeing it replace Avatar on the throne, however. Anything’s better than Avatar.

Eurogamer continues their talks with Shigeru Miyamoto (who revealed Pikmin 4 over the weekend, as I covered yesterday) in a pair of new videos featuring the gaming icon and his most famous creation, Mario. In the first ( seen above) Miyamoto along with Takashi Tezuka walk viewers through their approach to designing the very first level of Super Mario Bros. It’s fascinating hearing some of the subtle decision making and process behind this kind of game design, and there continued passion for the game is obvious. In the second of the videos, Tezuka shows off a Chain-Chomp themed level in Super Mario Maker. He discusses how to make design decisions while adjusting the course and tries to give his level a go to humorous results. Super Mario Maker releases this Friday, so look forward to seeing my review of the game soon.

EON Productions and MGM Studios officially announced this morning that English singer Sam Smith will be performing the theme for the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre. Entitled “Writing’s on the Wall,” the song was co-written by Smith and Jimmy Napes, reports Entertainment Weekly. The young singer will have the thankless task of following up Adele’s “Skyfall” from 2012’s similarly titled movie, which garnered an Academy Award, a Critics Choice Award, a Golden Globe and a Grammy. The song will be released on September 26, ahead of the release of Spectre on November 6.

Marvel Comics continues to roll out of its huge line-up of titles for its upcoming All-New All-Different Marvel initiative, and Mashable has the news on the latest one, Red Wolf. The book will be written by Punisher and Black Widow scribe Nathan Edmondson and drawn by Master of Kung Fu artist Dalibor Talajić, with covers and design by Jeffrey Veregge. The series will be the character’s first shot at a series in nearly 40 years, and will follow the same version of the character currently appearing in the Secret Wars title 1872, and will be displaced from his home dimension and instead living in the main Marvel Universe’s American Southwest. Here’s what Veregge had the following to say about the series:

“As a native, I’m really excited to see that he can do things, he can figure out things and stand with Captain America, and hold his own in this universe. That’s what’s awesome about it: You have all these characters of different nationalities and ethnicities, but it’s not all about their culture. It’s about them being a hero.”

The series will debut in December.
